European Energy Efficiency Directive 2012 & ISO 50001

Are you controlling your energy costs. How would your profitability be affected by an increase in energy costs or carbon based taxation? Do you need an external opinion to carry out a root and branch review of all your energy consumption? Are you compliant with Directive 2012/27/EU?

Under the DIRECTIVE 2012/27/EU Energy Efficiency Directive [EED] all EU countries are required to use energy more efficiently at all stages of the energy chain from its production to its final consumption. EU countries were required to transpose the Directive’s provisions into their national laws by 5th June 2014.

Under the legislation large organisations (non-SME and public body) are required to carry out an energy audit by 5th December 2015 and every four years after that by either

  • Conducting energy audits to measure total energy consumption and identify cost-effective energy efficiency recommendations or
  • Become certified to ISO 50001 / ISO 14001 (as outlined below)

Audits shall be carried out either by

  • independent registered energy auditors, or
  • in-house energy auditors provided they are registered under the energy audit scheme and who shall provide audit details to the SEAI upon request.

Energy will continue to contribute significantly to the operating costs of businesses and control of energy usage will contribute to business profitability. Control of fossil fuel based energy will reduce a business contribution to GHG emissions and its impact on Climate Change.

Picture of User Interface to an IT Energy Management SystemAn Energy Management System (EnMS) is a systematic process for continually improving energy performance. It is suitable for all organizations, whatever the size or sector, but is particularly beneficial if you operate energy-intensive processes.

ISO 50001:2011 is an energy management system whose purpose is to enable an organization to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and consumption. Like all other ISO standards, this is currently being reviewed and updated to integrate it with the other standards by incorporating the Annex SL format. Latest estimates are that the new standard is due for publication in 2019.
